MRI of your unborn baby or placenta is requested when the ultrasound scan has detected a possible issue. MRI is used to get additional images that compliment the ultrasound scan images, and are used to help to work out what the issue is, to help guide doctors what treatments can be offered and give information about the likely outcome for your baby.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a type of scan that used radio waves and magnetic fields to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. It is a painless procedure that involves lying down and being moved into the MRI scanner which is a large tube. The MRI scan will be reported by a specialist doctor (radiologist) and the result will be shared with you at your subsequent fetal medicine appointment.
