Overview

Fetal & Maternal Assessment Unit (FMAU)

Exeter has around 4000 deliveries per year. The FMAU is proud to work closely as a team with health care assistants, midwives, screening midwives, midwifery sonographers, sonographers and 2 doctors :  Helen Liversedge and Myles Taylor. Whilst strictly only a secondary care District General Hospital, it seeks to provide a wide variety of Fetal Medicine services which are more usually provided by tertiary level units. Thus, for example, Helen prides herself in offering expert cardiac ultrasound assessments, whilst Myles enjoys managing complex twin pregnancies. The unit offers some invasive procedures including amniocentesis and CVS. The unit holds fortnightly fetal medicine/neonatal/genetics multidisciplinary meetings where all fetal medicine cases are discussed, helping ensure that mothers benefit from expertise across many disciplines – particularly high quality genetics opinion. The unit is well supported by colleagues across the South West, and enjoys participating fully in the SW Fetal Medicine Network.
